When an entire family, including cousins, brothers, sisters and next generations consistently beat the odds after attending the same school of choice in Gary, Indiana, you have to smile. I do!
When GEO started its first charter school in Indiana back in 2002, we did so with a promise to produce better results than tradition expects. Due to our performance and demand for our schools from parents and state authorizers, we now have eight schools (four in Indiana and four in Louisiana) and serve nearly 4,000 students.
GEO received approval to open a new set of schools in Cleveland, Ohio, and our GEO Prep Mid City Baton Rouge school and Indianapolis GEO Next Generation Academy received extended charter renewal contract approvals.
Louisiana released School Performance Scores yesterday and all three GEO Academies—GEO Prep Mid City, GEO Prep and GEO Next Generation High School--earned a "B." If you look closer at the scores, you will see Mid City came in as the 7th best open enrollment elementary/middle school in Baton Rouge, and Prep came in as 12th best. Next Gen came in as 3rd best open enrollment high school.
This week started out with a great student visit to Notre Dame and Saint Mary's for four of our superstars attending our GEO Next Generation High School in Indianapolis.
I was in Gary, Indiana this week visiting with our 4th graders and asked, "How many of you want to go to college?" The picture at the top shows you the response I received. Looks like they all do. And, I'm betting everyone will go to college. And, I'm betting everyone will go to college BEFORE graduating from our high school.
21st Century Academy has been awarded a 2024 American Water Charitable Foundation Workforce Readiness Grant for $25,000.
Should high schools prepare students for college or careers? That seems to be the big question among ed reformers these days. Why not do both? We do!
